Message Getting prepared for rebuild re-assembly and noticed that a TECH article did things a bit differently when it came to the re-assembly process and which RTV's were used where. Great writeup BTW ...think it's Greg's....not sure...noticed da yellow. Anywho...For reference: La-Z-Link

(1) The last assembly I got to witness, the mechanic used gray RTV for the oil pan. He did make a bead, but he said to let it dry first. Then re-assemble after the RTV was dry. Also I saw him add a light layer of gray RTV on the valley of the oilpan as well....not a bead but more of a spread. He said "that's just a better gasket than the stock by adding that on there."

Was always questioning that in my head...was that the right RTV for the situation. Also, good/bad idea to spread a thin line of RTV on that?

(2) Also on the valve covers, I have typically used black RTV for the exhaust valve covers but noticed in this tech that they used orange RTV....any difference?

(3) I've always used Blue RTV for the thermostat housing, but I've seen folks use gray RTV for that. Actually I've seen a re-assembly almost all done with gray RTV. I questioned the mechanic about this and he said that the Gray RTV is the strongest and best one of most all of the gasket making needs and works like all of them (except for the valve covers application) but better and stronger. Am I wrong or right? Or is anyone wrong or right?

Just wanted to get some feedback on the RTV's, the money isn't the issue it's just what's best/most recommend from experienced folks on here. This isn't the 1st time I've done a re-assembly for the most part, but I was just kicking around the thoughts and thought I'd ask. Supposedly, there's no such thing as a dumb question.......

I beg to differ at times. :)

Thanks guys.
